- Scoliosis is a medical condition in which a person’s spiral axis has a three-dimensional deviation. It is
typically classified as with congenital, idiopathic, or secondary to a primary condition. While a normal
spinal axis resembles a straight line seen from the back, the spine of an individual with scoliosis can
resemble an “S” or a “?”, causing an unsymmetrical trunk.
- A mild scoliosis normally does not cause distinguishable physical malaise, nor does it cause any
visible handicap. On the contrary, a severe scoliosis can jeopardize physical growth of children and
of adolescents, even misshape the trunk, ending up in permanent cardiopulmonary and spinal
impairment, even paralysis.
- Medical management for scoliosis is complex and is determined by the severity of t he culture and
skeletal maturity. For mild cases, physical therapy and kinesiotherapy can be a good option, while
bracing and surgical operation are required for severe cases.
